Find Answers to Questions About Children’s Dental Care Here

Do you have questions about how to properly and effectively care for your child’s smile? If so, you’re not alone. Many people also have questions. Children’s dental and smile care can be confusing and even overwhelming! Because it’s very important to care for your child’s teeth and gums, our dentists, Drs. Paul and Brant Stanovick, are happy to help you find the answers to your questions. To help you do so, we would like to share the answers to the following commonly asked questions:

Q: How often should I clean my child’s teeth and gums?
A: It’s recommended to brush your child’s teeth every morning and night. It’s also recommended to floss your child’s teeth once a day, but this is only recommended if your child’s chompers have all erupted from the gums and the teeth are tightly knit together. If your child is still missing teeth, there is still enough room between the teeth for the toothbrush to clean the area as you scrub.

Q: What oral hygiene tools should I use to clean my child’s smile?
A: It’s best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush that is child sized. This tool can help you properly clean the teeth. It’s also best to use swallow-safe toothpaste if your child tends to swallow the paste as they brush, and it’s best to use fluoride-free toothpaste if your child is under the age of 3.

Q: How often should I take my child to the dental office for a checkup?
A: You should bring your child into our office every six months, starting six months after their first tooth erupts or around their first birthday.

-Keep up on oral hygiene: Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. It’s also recommended to floss your smile and rinse your mouth at least once a day. In addition to brushing, flossing and rinsing, you need to visit your dentist every six months for a routine cleaning and checkup. So if you’re due for your professional dental cleaning, schedule an appointment now.

-Take advantage of teeth whitening: For a stunning and beautiful smile this holiday season, take advantage of teeth whitening. There are many treatments available, but if you want a beneficial and successful treatment, talk to your dentist about a professional whitening treatment.

-Don’t open your presents with your teeth: Using your teeth as tools could damage your smile more than you know. This is why we ask you to avoid opening your Christmas gifts with your teeth. Doing so can chip and fracture your teeth.

There are many treatments available that can help you achieve the smile of your dreams, like dental crowns, dental bridges, dental implants, dental veneers and more. Do You Have Cancer? If so, Here Are Some Ways to Maintain a Healthy Smile

Did you know that your chances of infection increase during cancer treatment if you have an unhealthy smile? Well, it’s true, which is why it’s best to take care of your smile before you begin chemotherapy or radiation.

Some things you can do to ensure a strong oral health are:

-Visit your dentist: It’s best to treat all of your dental issues before you begin treatment. By treating the areas of concern, you will likely reduce the chances of having dental side effects when you undergo chemotherapy and radiation.

-Brush regularly: It’s very important to brush your teeth twice a day with an extra-soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. If you need a softer brush, you can soak your toothbrush in warm water.

-Floss: Do your best to floss once a day. This will help remove plaque from between your teeth, which will help prevent gum disease. If your gums are sensitive or sore or if they are bleeding, avoid flossing those areas and move on to flossing the other teeth.

-Avoid using tobacco: Tobacco products are very harmful to your body, especially your mouth. So, it’s best to avoid using tobacco products. Also, if you stop using these products, your body will likely heal faster.

-Rinse often: It’s recommended to rinse your mouth at least once a day. However, please use rinse that does not contain alcohol. Rinsing will help you deeply clean your smile and will help reduce your chances of having decay and infection. It will also protect your teeth from the acidic particles that live in vomit.

Doing these things will help you prevent additional issues that can cause infection and troubles. If you have any questions or if you would like to learn more about how to care for your smile when you have cancer in Mechanicsville, Virginia, please call our office today at 804-781-1919. Drs. Paul R. Stanovick, Brant Stanovick, and our friendly dental team are happy to help you!

Test Your Knowledge With this Toothpaste Quiz

Do you think you have a perfect knowledge of toothpaste? If so, our Dr. Paul R. Stanovick, DDS, team wants to test your wisdom! To find out what you really know about toothpaste in Mechanicsville, Virginia, we encourage you to take this toothpaste quiz:

Question No. 1: Do all toothpaste brands use the same ingredients?
Answer: No, toothpaste ingredients can vary from brand to brand, which is why it’s important to pay attention to the ingredients in the toothpaste you purchase. Each ingredient has its own benefit and function.

Question No. 2: When is the most effective time to use toothpaste?
Answer: The best and most effective time to use toothpaste is right after a professional dental cleaning. This is a beneficial time because the toothpaste has direct access to the clean tooth surface, which makes brushing more effective.

Question No. 3: What is the best ingredient to have in toothpaste?
Answer: The best ingredient to have in toothpaste is fluoride. Fluoride is the best because it nourishes and strengthens your teeth, giving them the ability and strength to fight off tooth decay and other major dental issues.

Question No. 4: Does the form of toothpaste matter?
Answer: No, the form of toothpaste doesn’t matter. As long as the product has fluoride, it doesn’t matter if it is a paste, gel, or powder.

Question No. 5: Should children use the same toothpaste as adults?
Answer: No, children should not use the same toothpaste as adults. Sometimes, the adult toothpastes contain too much fluoride for the children’s teeth to handle, which is why it’s best to give children toothpaste that is made for kids.
