While laser dentistry is becoming more and more prevalent among dentists, the technology is still somewhat new and not yet commonplace in all dental offices.
The benefits of laser use in dentistry are manifold. The intense beam of light can cut like a sharp knife, sterilize, and cauterize the wound at the same time. Lasers can remove oral tissue or reshape it. Lasers are even used to whiten teeth.
There are different laser instruments used for different dental operations. The same laser tool that is used for surgery is not the appropriate kind to use for teeth whitening. Below are some other procedures where dentists use lasers:
-Uncovering wisdom teeth that only emerge part way.
-Prepping a tooth for a filling by burning away decay.
-Removing bacteria growing on teeth and around gums when you have periodontitis.
Laser dentistry is completely safe. When properly trained, a dentist will use a laser the same way he would other dental instruments.
There are many advantages that laser dentistry has over more traditional methods. Anesthesia is not always needed when using lasers as many procedures are completely painless. With lasers sealing the wound, bleeding is much reduced. Also, dentists can be more accurate with a laser than a drill or other instruments.
Of course, laser instruments are not always the right choice for all dental operations. So, confer with your dentist to find out whether lasers are the best option.
